mesh pool cover vs solid cover?
I need a new winter cover for our pool. I noticed there is something called a "mesh" winter cover. Which is best? A mesh cover or a solid winter cover?
There are two types of what can be called "mesh" covers. One is essentially a net that goes over a sold cover, pulled tight like a trampoline and is intended to keep leafs from dropping on the solid cover ( the leafs stay dry and simply blow away) so that in spring, you don't have a ton of wet leafs on the solid cover to remove. Makes opening a little easier and cheaper. This is commonly called a leaf net cover.
The other type of "mesh" is commonly called a safety cover. The mesh material is much finer than a leaf net. It allows snow loads to melt and seep into the pool but not dirt and debris. It has it's own anchoring system that's installed by drilling holes in the deck, installing anchors ( only have to do it on the initial install) and adjusting the cover straps and springs for a tight fit. These anchors screw down flush with the deck when not in use.The cover becomes a trampoline. You can walk over your pool. Great if you have small kids or pets since at most, they'll get a little wet at the centre of the pool but not wrapped up and potentially drown or suffocate in something like a solid ( poly tarp) cover. I always tested ones I installed by taking a walk across. Only my shoes got wet at the centre of the cover. This type of cover is expensive though and generally takes one person that's handy, about 2-3 hours to install at first because of the measuring and drilling but after that, when each winter comes, it takes only perhaps 10 minutes to put on by a single person.
They can be custom made to fit any pool, even ones with waterfalls or poolside spas. The only downside to them is that you ought to close late ( you don't have to heat, just keep the pump running) and should open early. Because they are a mesh, they allow a little sun in, which knocks down your winterizing chlorine count.
Deciding which is best for you comes down to budget,safety and how much work you're willing to do. The old standard poly tarp cover with water bags or lock in ( vinyl in ground pools with dual track coping) will always do the trick but takes work every season and there's entrapment issues not to mention the possibility of the cover falling in somewhere if you're not keeping an eye on it. If you used a leaf net on top of it, your work load in spring is less. They also tend to "uglify" the backyard a bit too.
A Safety cover on the other hand is less work after the first fall, is safest for all and doesn't fall in. No leaf net required since it acts as a leaf net too and damn...they look great in a backyard by comparison.
